Engagement Ring (Guide)

A man holds an engagement ring in a case

For most couples, an engagement ring is an essential part of a classic marriage proposal. To ensure that the proposal ring captures your fiancée's heart and brings her joy for many years to come, there are some things to consider when making the purchase. We have compiled some information and helpful tips to make the selection of the perfect engagement ring easier for you.

General Tips

Allocate Sufficient Time

The search for an engagement ring takes time. Therefore, start at least 4 months before the planned proposal to inform yourself about the topic. This way, you can calmly get an overview of the options available and compare different choices regarding material or stone settings. Also, consider the manufacturing and delivery time. Many engagement rings are custom-made after the ordering process. Thus, it may take up to 12 weeks for the finished engagement ring to arrive. It can also happen that the respective ring size is temporarily unavailable. Therefore, plan enough time so that you don't feel rushed.

Set a Price Limit

How much should an engagement ring cost? That is an important question that many people ask. Especially since it is often said that an engagement ring should have a value of one to three months' salaries. This view is particularly widespread in the USA, where it is not uncommon for men to spend several thousand dollars on the proposal ring.

Since the engagement ring ideally accompanies the future bride for a lifetime, such an investment should be well thought out. However, engagement rings are available in different price ranges, and you don't have to spend a month's salary or more on them. More importantly, select a ring that suits your partner's taste and brings her joy.

How much you spend on buying an engagement ring is an individual decision. To find a reasonable price, you can set a budget with an upper and lower limit in advance. Within this price range, you can choose a suitable ring considering your financial situation, your personal style, and the expectations for the piece of jewellery.

Types of Engagement Rings

The selection of engagement rings is enormous, ranging from classic models to unique designs. Below, we introduce you to the most popular designs. You can find your favourites in our engagement rings category.

A Solitaire ring

Solitaire Ring

The Solitaire ring is adorned with a single diamond and is the classic among engagement rings. Its ring shank can either have a straight shape or taper towards the front. Its design makes the Solitaire ring a timeless engagement ring for eternity. Traditionally, the Solitaire ring is held by 6 prongs, giving the appearance of the stone sitting in a crown. The 4-prong setting looks more modern and makes the diamond appear more angular. In a bezel setting, the diamond is embedded all around in the precious metal.

For those who find the classic Solitaire ring too simple, a Solitaire ring with additional diamonds is a delightful option. The diamonds are arranged in the front section along the ring shank, adding extra brilliance to the central stone.

An Engagement ring with curved ring shank and side stone setting

These types of engagement rings exude stylish elegance. Their ring shanks are either divided, curved, or intertwined on the front. The design of the ring shanks beautifully highlights the central stone. Multiple small stones adorn the sides of the main stone, enhancing its sparkle.

A Halo Ring

Halo Ring

In this ring, the central stone is surrounded by a frame of diamonds. This frame resembles a "halo" and enhances the brilliance of the central stone by making it appear larger. Additionally, the central stone can come in various cuts, whether round, oval, square, pear-shaped, or heart-shaped – there's something for every style.

The Halo Ring with additional stone setting along the ring shank promises stunning sparkle and maximum brilliance. The central stone can be round, oval, square, or have a heart or pear shape. The central stone is surrounded by a frame of small diamonds.

A Tension Ring

Tension Ring

Charming tension rings captivate with a sophisticated design. In these engagement rings, the stone is not held in a separate setting but is held in place by tension in the open ring shank. The stone does not protrude beyond the ring shank and achieves a floating appearance. As the diamond doesn't require a setting, more rays of light penetrate the stone, enhancing its brilliance. This creates a modern look that is minimalist, putting the focus on the stone. Some rings have a tension ring appearance solely to secure the diamond, featuring a bridge with a small opening beneath the diamond, not visible from the outside, ensuring a secure hold.

A Curved Tension Ring

Curved Tension Ring

In addition to the classic tension ring or a ring with a tension ring appearance, there are other variants. In these rings, the stone is tension-set between the open ring shank, which also has a curved form. These models give the ring a playful touch that makes it a standout piece.

Even tension rings and engagement rings with a tension ring appearance can be brought to life by stones set on the sides of the ring shank. This adds a sparkling accent to the otherwise understated design.

A Trinity Engagement Ring

Trinity Engagement Ring

This engagement ring is adorned with three sparkling stones. The stones are either of equal size, or the central stone in the middle is accompanied on each side by a smaller stone. The three stones can have different cuts or be composed of different types of stones (e.g., diamonds and gemstones).

An Eternity Ring

Eternity Ring

The Eternity Ring, also known as a Memoir Ring, is set with diamonds or other stones along the entire ring shank or at least a significant part of it. For special occasions, such as the birth of a child, additional diamonds can be added later. The sparkling diamonds are set in a prong or channel setting. The term "Eternity Ring" comes from the fact that in this design, neither a beginning nor an end is discernible.

An Engagement Ring with an exclusive design

There are no limits to diversity and variation. These proposal rings captivate with an impressive stone setting of sparkling diamonds, intertwined ring shanks, or embellishments.

A Floral Engagement Ring

The designs of these rings are inspired by nature. They enchant with a stone setting of one or more diamonds. Settings in flower shapes or floral embellishments on the ring shanks make them an absolute eye-catcher.

How to Find the Perfect Engagement Ring?

Finding the perfect engagement ring in this vast selection can be a challenge. Here, you'll discover what matters in choosing the design, material, and stone setting, as well as how to determine the right ring size.

Choosing a Design

Amidst a variety of options, finding the perfect engagement ring is a challenge. To make the selection a success and to meet your partner's taste, you can orient yourself towards her jewellery and clothing style. A discreet glance into her jewellery box can provide insights into the style she likes. You can also discover the preferred colour for the ring in this way.

If she prefers minimalistic everyday jewellery, she will likely appreciate a subtle engagement ring. It doesn't have to be adorned; a simple gold ring with a set diamond can be beautiful. On the other hand, if she favours extravagant statement pieces, her heart may beat for an extravagant engagement ring. This should radiate pure glamour and stand out with an extraordinary design and stone setting.

To hit the right style, you can also subtly inquire with your fiancée. For example, during a casual stroll through the city, you could try to find out what she likes at a jewellery store. Equally helpful can be asking friends or the mother of the future bride. If you're at a loss and no one can help, you can consider whether you want to choose the engagement ring together. This may seem less romantic at first glance but has several advantages. Your partner can choose her engagement ring according to her own wishes, and you can be sure that the ring will be liked, and the size will be right in the end.

Choosing the Material

Silver, gold, or perhaps platinum? The choices are not only overwhelming when it comes to the material but also in terms of colour and fineness of the alloy. In addition to personal taste, the material's robustness and price play a crucial role.

Sterling Silver Engagement Rings (925er Silver)

An engagement ring made of 925 sterling silver, also known as sterling silver, is the most affordable option. Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals like copper. The characteristic white colour of pure silver adds elegance to the ring. Silver jewellery may tarnish over time, resulting in dark discolouration. To preserve the brilliance and beauty of silver rings, regular care is necessary. Some pieces receive a protective coating of rhodium to slow down this natural process. With proper care, silver engagement rings can be appealing companions.

Gold Engagement Rings

Three Rings in Yellow, White, and Rose Gold

With golden engagement rings, you have the choice between yellow, white, and rose gold. The classic yellow gold is still popular and is often chosen when the future wedding rings are also to be made from this material. Engagement rings made of white gold appear elegant and timeless, as the silver-coloured precious metal harmonises beautifully with sparkling diamonds. In recent years, rose gold has come back into fashion. Those wishing for a romantic version of the engagement ring make a good choice with rose gold.

What is the appropriate gold alloy?

Once the colour of the gold alloy has been chosen, the question of the fineness of the alloy remains. Should one opt for rings made of 333, 375, 585, or 750 gold? The number indicates how high the gold content of the piece of jewellery is and is often also given in carats. Since pure gold is too soft and unsuitable for jewellery making, it is mixed with proportions of silver and copper. This makes the gold alloy harder and more resistant and gives it its special colour. To obtain rose gold, the copper content is increased, while white gold is alloyed from the metals yellow gold, silver, zinc, and palladium.

In Germany, a piece of jewellery must consist of at least 8-karat gold (333 gold) to be considered as gold jewellery. The most common alloys include 375 (9 karat), 585 (14 karat), and 750 (18 karat) gold. Engagement and wedding rings are usually chosen in the alloys of 585 or 750 gold. With the proportion of pure gold, the value and hence the price of the piece of jewellery increase. A 375 gold ring with around 37.5% pure gold content is therefore not as high-quality as a ring made of 585 or 750 gold with around 58.5% and 75% pure gold content, respectively.

Engagement Rings Made of Platinum and Palladium

Platinum and palladium are two additional high-quality materials for engagement rings. Platinum is even rarer than gold. Both platinum and palladium are known for their high resilience and robustness, making them popular alternatives for white gold engagement rings. Palladium, with its silver-white colour, is brighter than the grey-white platinum. The weight of the two materials also differs, with platinum being heavy due to its high density, while palladium is lightweight. Engagement rings made of platinum and palladium are perfect for everyday wear, as their purity makes them particularly skin-friendly. Platinum is usually found in a 600 or 950 alloy, and palladium is available in a 500, 585, or 950 alloy.

Invest in Quality and Durability

The engagement ring will likely accompany your loved one for the rest of her life. Therefore, it is important to focus on good quality when making this investment. While silver rings offer a budget-friendly alternative, engagement rings made of gold, platinum, or palladium are much higher in quality and durability. For this reason, engagement rings made of gold with diamonds have been given for decades.

Choosing the Stone Setting

A classic engagement ring is adorned with one or more stones, which can be natural or lab-grown diamonds, gemstones, or cubic zirconia stones. The following explores the differences in stone settings.

Engagement Rings with Diamonds

Diamonds are a modification of carbon and are considered the hardest mineral in the world. In terms of their durability and breathtaking brilliance, they are unrivaled. Diamonds are made for eternity and are the most popular stone setting for an engagement ring, symbolizing everlasting love. The quality and, consequently, the price of a diamond are measured by the 4 C's: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

The Cut

The cut is essential for the diamond to unleash its radiance. Diamonds with a brilliant cut are called brilliants. This cut is the most popular, as the round-cut diamond can unfold its inherent fire and maximum brilliance through its 57 facets. Other cuts include princess cut, marquise cut, emerald cut, and cushion cut. Additionally, there are diamonds with an oval cut, heart-shaped, or pear-shaped.

The Colour

Diamonds come in different colours, with colourless diamonds being the most coveted. This is because a transparent diamond can optimally reflect the incident light and create the characteristic play of light in the diamond. The colour grades of a diamond range from the D colour grade (River), which is colourless, to a light yellow hue (O – Cape). The most common colour grades for diamonds are F/G (Top Wesselton) to H (Wesselton). Diamonds in intense colours such as yellow, pink, blue, or black are called Fancy Diamonds. These diamonds are rare and highly sought after.

The Clarity (Clarity)

The clarity of a diamond is determined by the number of its impurities, known as inclusions. If these inclusions are not visible to an expert at 10 times magnification, it is called a flawless diamond (fl). There are 11 clarity classifications.

The Carat Weight (Carat)

Carat is a unit of measurement for gemstones, indicating the weight of the stone. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Engagement rings typically feature diamonds with a carat weight between 0.05 ct. and 2.00 ct.

Origin

Another criterion in choosing diamonds is their origin. Diamonds with a conflict-free origin are mined and sold following the Kimberley Process, adhering to ethical standards.

For more information on the 4 C's, you can refer to our detailed Diamond Guide.

Lab-grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are genuine diamonds that have been created in a laboratory. These diamonds do not differ in their value-determining properties from conventionally mined diamonds. Like natural diamonds, they are composed of carbon and have a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. This scale ranges from 1-10 and indicates the hardness of materials, with diamonds considered the hardest substance. The distinctive fire and sparkle of lab-grown diamonds are just as beautiful as naturally occurring diamonds. Their quality is also assessed according to the 4 C's. The only difference between conventionally mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds is their origin, making lab-grown diamonds particularly attractive. Due to their production method in the laboratory, these diamonds are not only more affordable but also more environmentally friendly as mining is eliminated. Usually, when purchasing a lab-grown diamond, you receive a free authenticity certificate issued by a renowned international gemology laboratory (IGI or GIA).

Engagement Rings with Gemstones

Engagement rings with coloured gemstones are becoming increasingly popular. Among the most favoured gemstones for engagement rings are sapphire, ruby, and emerald. These gemstones also possess high hardness (9 on the Mohs scale) and add a dreamy splash of colour. Gemstones come in various sizes and cuts, and they blend wonderfully with white diamonds.

Engagement Rings with Cubic Zirconia

When budget considerations come into play, synthetic cubic zirconia stones can be an affordable alternative to diamonds. Cubic zirconia stones are often found in engagement rings made of 925 sterling silver. Their appearance resembles that of diamonds, even though they don't possess the same hardness and brilliance.

Determining the Ring Size

Ring sizes can vary by country due to the use of different ring sizing systems. In Germany, the circumference (in mm) of the finger is used to determine the ring size. Other countries may use the inner diameter (in mm) or specific ring sizing systems.

It's important to note that the fingers of the right and left hands can differ, and the sizes of the left and right ring fingers may also vary. Additionally, external factors such as the time of day and temperature can influence the ring size, as fingers are thinner in the morning or in cold weather compared to the evening or in warm temperatures.

Since the correct ring size is crucial for comfort, and we are dealing with measurements in the tenth-of-a-millimeter range, the size should be accurately determined. It's best to measure multiple times a day, ensuring that the fingers are comfortably warm. Also, measure the width at the base of the finger and at the knuckle. If the sizes differ, it's advisable to choose a size between these two measurements.

How to Measure Ring Size?

A Multisizer on a finger for measuring ring size

One option is to use a special ring gauge (Multisizer). This ring gauge can provide an initial guide to determine the size of the ring. It's crucial to use the Multisizer accurately. Learn how to use it precisely in this guide , and you can get a Multisizer here.

Caution:

Avoid determining the size using a template to print, a paper strip, or a thread. These measurements are rarely precise and may risk the ring not fitting.

If the engagement is intended to be a surprise, the ring size must be inconspicuously determined. The following tips can help with that:

Check the jewellery box

Make sure to look in the jewellery box for a ring worn on the ring finger. Otherwise, the correct size for the engagement ring may differ.

Gift another ring

You could, for example, gift your partner a piece of jewellery in the form of a ring for her birthday. This way, you can subtly engage her in a conversation about ring sizes and approach the right ring size.

Have the ring size determined by a jeweller

You could ask a friend to try on rings with the future bride while engaging her in casual conversation.

Adding an Engraving

Engagement rings, like wedding rings, can be adorned with a personal engraving. This way, you can immortalise a romantic message on the inside of the ring. You have the choice between a diamond or laser engraving.

We have compiled some suggestions for engravings:

  • The date you met
  • The date of the engagement
  • The names or initials of the partners
  • Sweet nicknames
  • A romantic inscription, such as "Forever and Always" or "Forever Yours"

Please note: Engraved rings are generally non-returnable. Therefore, it is advisable to have the engagement ring engraved at a later date when it is certain that the ring is truly liked and fits the future bride.

The search for the perfect engagement ring can be challenging. We hope our tips assist you in the selection, and our extensive range of engagement rings inspires you. Whatever ring you choose, we wish you as a couple all the best for your future together!

Ideas for the Marriage Proposal

Two gold-coloured hearts and the text Will you marry me?

The moment for the question of all questions has arrived. But where and how do you ask for your sweetheart's hand? Below, we've compiled a few ideas and tips for marriage proposals.

Although the marriage proposal can be made by both partners, in the majority of cases, men take the initiative. These proposals typically follow tradition – with a kneel and an engagement ring.

Engagement Ring is a Must for Many

The engagement ring as a symbol of the marriage promise is still a romantic gesture during the marriage proposal. While giving an engagement ring is not strictly necessary, it is part of the proposal for many couples.

Is a Kneel Still Contemporary?

Traditionally, the man kneels on his left knee during the marriage proposal. This gesture likely originates from the time of knights and served as an expression of loyalty, respect, and fidelity. Even today, the traditional kneel is popular in many proposals and enjoyed by many. However, some find the kneel old-fashioned. Ultimately, it's about what feels right for you and your partner.

When Should I Propose?

A popular date for a marriage proposal is the couple's anniversary. Many proposals also happen on Valentine's Day, Christmas, or New Year's Eve. However, you don't have to wait for a special date. Sometimes, a fitting moment presents itself naturally, making the surprise even greater.

Choose an Appropriate Location

When choosing a suitable location for the marriage proposal, consider whether you want to experience this special moment in romantic intimacy, in the presence of family and friends, or in public. Trust your instincts and see what suits you as a couple.

If you value intimacy, a cosy meal, a glass of wine, and a bouquet of flowers at home create a romantic atmosphere. Proposals at the place of the first meeting or another emotional location that connects both of you are popular. A holiday is also often chosen for a marriage proposal. The mood is relaxed during a holiday, and you're already in a beautiful place.

Equally beautiful is making a proposal during a shared activity, such as a leisurely walk in nature or a picnic. But maybe that's too ordinary, and you want to plan something special for the marriage proposal? Then, you can let your creativity run wild. How about a romantic boat trip on a lake, a self-written song, or a proposal on a billboard?

What Do I Say?

In such an emotional moment, many find it challenging to find the right words. But with a bit of preparation, that can be achieved too. It's essential to speak from the heart. What do you want to say to your loved one in your own words? Let yourself be inspired by the following questions:

  • What does your partner mean to you?
  • How have you experienced your time together so far?
  • How does she enrich your life?
  • Why is she the person you want to grow old with?

With answers to these questions, you can quickly compose a brief speech. Some nervousness is normal. It helps to write down the key points on a piece of paper and practise the proposal in advance.

On Which Finger Is the Engagement Ring Worn?

Man placing an engagement ring on his girlfriend's left finger

The finger on which the engagement ring is worn varies from country to country. In Germany and Austria, it's customary to wear the engagement ring on the ring finger of the left hand. The later wedding ring is placed on the ring finger of the right hand. Some women choose to wear their engagement ring on the right ring finger. The tradition of wearing the engagement ring on the left and the wedding ring on the right finger is also common in other countries in Eastern and Northern Europe. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, England, the Mediterranean region, and the USA, both the engagement and wedding rings are worn on the ring finger of the left hand.

These cultural differences stem from various influences and traditions. In ancient Egypt and ancient Greece, married couples also wore their wedding rings on the left ring finger. In ancient Rome, committed women also wore their engagement or wedding ring on the left ring finger. This practice was based on the belief of the time that a specific vein, known as "vena amoris" or the vein of love, directly connects the left ring finger to the heart. As a result, in most countries today, the engagement ring is traditionally worn on the left hand.

After the wedding, the engagement ring loses its original meaning as a symbol of an impending marriage. However, the emotional significance remains, and many women wish to continue wearing their engagement ring. The bride can decide whether to continue wearing the ring on the left or whether the engagement ring becomes a guard ring for the wedding ring on the ring finger of the right hand. The trend of wearing the engagement ring as a guard ring for the wedding ring originated in the USA and is gaining popularity in Europe.

What to Do if the Ring Does Not Appeal?

Despite all efforts, it can still happen that the carefully chosen ring for the fiancée does not appeal or fit. In this case, you should first remain calm. If you received a "yes" in response to your question, then all is well.

In most cases, the ring can be altered or exchanged. Contact the respective jeweller and discuss the matter. Depending on the material, a size adjustment is possible afterward, or you can exchange the ring and purchase a more fitting one.

Care Tips for Engagement Rings

An engagement ring with a cleaning cloth

Frequently worn pieces of jewellery will show signs of use over time. This applies to high-quality engagement rings and is normal. To ensure long-lasting enjoyment of your engagement ring, here are a few tips for the proper handling and care of the ring:

  • Store the engagement ring separately from other pieces of jewellery in a case or jewellery box
  • Avoid direct contact between the engagement ring and creams or perfume, allowing them to be absorbed into the skin first
  • Remove the engagement ring when showering, swimming, or bathing and place it in a secure location
  • Clean the engagement ring regularly with a special cleaning cloth or a damp, lint-free cloth
  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • Take off the engagement ring before sports and any other activities that could damage the ring

Engagement Ring for the Man

Woman proposing to her boyfriend in a bar

With the engagement, you show your loved one that you are ready to bind yourself for eternity. The engagement ring has been a romantic symbol of promised love, loyalty, and connection for decades. Although the majority of marriage proposals are initiated by men, an increasing number of women are proposing to their partners. And with marriage equality, the number of same-sex couples making promises to each other is also increasing.

If you want to give your partner a proposal ring during the marriage proposal, you have a wide selection. In addition to simple rings made of silver, gold, platinum, or stainless steel, there are trendy models made of titanium or tungsten. Titanium is a high-quality and durable material, and tungsten is known for its high hardness.
