The term ball chain is used to describe jewellery chains which receive their name from the characteristic composition of individual balls. The classic version consists of several balls in the same size, which are strung together. In the meantime, however, the ball design also varies. There are ball chains that consist of elongated and round links. Or the balls simply alternate in size. The mostly hollow balls are held together by small rods between them. There are two opposite holes in the spheres through which the rods reach into them. On the inside there is a head that prevents the rod from slipping out of the hole. Consequently, each ball is held by two rods. The clasp of the chain varies in the meantime. There is mainly the classic clasp with a carabiner, which is familiar to everyone. For a very long time, however, a clasp was common which clamped the desired last ball in a kind of gap and the chain could only be opened again by pulling it firmly. The advantage of such a clasp is the possibility to wear the chain in different lengths. Ball chains are usually made of silver or stainless steel. Only in the rarest designs are ball chains worn as a standalone, i.e. without a decorative pendant. Above all, the ball chain is not only jewellery for women. Men can also adorn themselves with it. The combination with a dog tag pendant is particularly cool. This type of chain does not get knotted and is very robust, thus qualifying it for practical uses.
